Rejecting the Status Quo through Energy
Modern dance stems from the premise of rebellion and rejecting the status quo, the lack of diversity is still a common issue within the dance community. Because of this, BEYOND THE BEAT is dedicated to the accessibility of the history of Black Modern dance and how to utilize its unique characteristics and themes in their own dancing.
Energy is a common theme explored within modern dance. On a physical level, dance is literal energy in motion: momentum, force, rhythm, gravity. Every jump, turn, and suspension is a negotiation of how energy is stored, released, redirected.
On a human level, energy is what dancers feel from each other. One person’s intensity raises the room. A shared rhythm syncs bodies. A pause can be just as electric as a full-out phrase. That invisible exchange is why dancing in a room together feels different than dancing alone.
Through art direction and copywriting, energy becomes a visual theme conceptualized within the brand.
Creative Advertisement Strategy
Energy and dance go together because dance is energy made visible.
Before a movement has shape or technique, it has charge; breath building in the chest, weight shifting, and intention forming. Dance doesn’t create energy; it channels it. The body becomes the medium where emotional, physical, and collective energy move through space.
These advertisement utilize the visual concept of combining energy and dance.

The Brand System of BEYOND THE BEAT
The brand systems of BEYOND THE BEAT is used to organize ID badges and pamphlets designed for the conference. The color system is divided into three colors (red, green, and yellow) and three separate forms of imagery.

BEYOND THE BEAT is a branded dance conference for Black modern dancers to learn more about the history of Black Modern dance and how to utilize its unique characteristics and themes in their own dancing.
